We’ve made it! After the usual road trip chaos, we’ve finally landed in the Lake District for our summer escape. The caravan is set up in its forest spot and our little base camp is ready. It’s quiet, shady and tucked into the trees, the perfect start to our mountain days and restful evenings.
Setting up felt smooth, especially with the boys keeping a close eye on operations from their pen. They’ve slipped right into holiday mode already. The awning is up, kettle has been on and we’ve even managed a few quiet moments watching the trees sway above.
Today’s wander was an easy one. After the travel and settling in, we took things gently with a 4 mile loop on the flat. A mix of forest paths, lake views and plenty of sniffs for the boys. They led the way, of course, through thick green woods and down to the water’s edge of Derwent water where we had a little pause to take in the views. Those mountains in the distance are waiting.
We passed a few bridges and old buildings on our route, adding a bit of history to the calm surroundings. It’s hard not to stop every few steps just to look up and around.
There’s something grounding about this place. Whether we are wandering the woods or sitting with a cup of tea back at base, it feels good to be here. The trip is only just beginning and we’re easing into it gently. More walks to come, more exploring and a bit of adventure — just at our own pace.
The boys are snoozing now and I think I’ll join them for a while. Mountains can wait until tomorrow.
