What I’ve Learned from the Hills

Welcome to my blog! I'm sharing my journey into wild camping, hillwalking, and adventures with my two poodles—Teddy and Buddy—and I’ll be adding more stories, tips, and moments as they happen.
One tent, two dogs, and a heart full of adventure.
Hi, I'm Clive, just a regular person who finally stopped saying “one day” and started saying “let’s go.” I’m here to share my journey into wild camping, hillwalking, and slow living, one breath of fresh mountain air at a time.
It all started with one night under the stars. A heavy pack, tired legs, and two eager dogs at my side. We climbed high, camped higher, and watched the sunset from the edge of the world. I froze through the night, boiled coffee with numb fingers at dawn and I loved every second of it.
This blog is where I’ll share those moments: honest stories, peaceful places, lessons learned the hard way, and the quiet kind of joy that comes from carrying your own world on your back. If you love nature, dogs, walking for miles, or just want to feel a little more grounded in a noisy world, you’re in good company.
So whether you're a seasoned wild camper or just curious about trying it for the first time, I hope you’ll find something here that inspires you to step outside, breathe deeply, and maybe even pitch your own tent in the wild.
Let’s walk this path together.

What I’ve Learned from the Hills

Up until this point, my body had been something I trusted without question. It carried me up hills, across uneven ground, and through long days outdoors without complaint. I had learned to read tired legs and sore feet, to rest when needed and push on when it felt right. Movement felt dependable. Reliable. It was never something I thought twice about.

Today we made the long journey back to Shropshire after four incredible weeks in the Lake District. It was a little sad to pack up and leave behind the fells, the lakes, and the wild spaces that have become our home for the summer. Teddy and Buddy have loved every muddy mile, every summit breeze, and every cosy camp, and so have I.

Ten years ago, I stood on the opposite side of this valley in very different conditions. The weather was foul, cloud clung so low that the fells disappeared into it, the rain lashed sideways, and the path was little more than a stream. I remember trudging along, soaked through, trying to imagine the views I couldn’t see. At the time, I thought: people must be mad if they climb these fells for fun.

Ten years and three days ago, I stood at St Bees with very little idea of what I was doing. I’d never walked up a mountain, I’d never gone further than about ten miles, and I certainly didn’t know what lay ahead of me. But I was there, rucksack on my back, staring at the sign at the start of the Coast to Coast and about to take my first steps on a journey that would change everything.

This latest poodle adventure took us from Keswick to Grasmere, and it was without a doubt my toughest challenge yet.

Climbing Cat Bells – A Cloudy Summit and Poodle Power

We’ve made it! After the usual road trip chaos, we’ve finally landed in the Lake District for our summer escape. The caravan is set up in its forest spot and our little base camp is ready. It’s quiet, shady and tucked into the trees, the perfect start to our mountain days and restful evenings.

🌄 A Return to Simplicity, Wild Camping With the poodles. After a rough ride in the Berwyns and a still sore hip, I decided to ease myself back in with a smaller wild camping adventure, heading back to the place where our first night under the stars took shape. With the heatwave lingering, we delayed our start and reached the car park just after 4pm.

New gear day! 💙The KILOS Gear sleeping mat finally arrived — the blue one with the separate pillow that straps on. I was very excited to open this parcel (who doesn’t love new kit?) and first impressions are… actually pretty good!

One night, two poodles, and a whole lot of weather

I started this blog after my first wild camping trip, a cold, beautiful, unforgettable night in the hills with my two dogs. It was something I’d talked about for years, and finally doing it changed everything.
This space is a way to capture those moments, reflect on what I’m learning, and share the simple joy of being outside. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about getting out there, one step at a time.
No wild camping trip would be complete without my two four-legged companions Teddy and Buddy.
Teddy, the black toy poodle, is the quiet observer. Thoughtful, loyal, and always alert, he takes his role as camp guardian very seriously (especially when squirrels are involved). He’s the first to settle by the tent and the last to miss a sunrise.
Buddy, the apricot toy poodle, is the life of the trail. Curious, cheerful, and full of personality, he brings the fun wherever we go. He’s usually the one leading the way with a wagging tail and a nose in every bush.
Together, they make the perfect adventure team small in size but big in spirit. They’ve handled long hikes, chilly nights, and remote hilltops like seasoned explorers (with plenty of naps and snacks, of course).
They’re more than pets they’re my trail buddies, my motivation, and a big part of why every journey into the wild is so special
