Latrigg – Our Last Wainwright of the Trip

Our latest adventure took us up Latrigg, one of the smaller and most accessible of Alfred Wainwright’s fells, but no less rewarding for it. At just 1,207 feet, Latrigg is often described as the “family fell” of Keswick. It’s a popular choice for those looking for a shorter climb with a big payoff at the top.

For Teddy and Buddy, it was a joyful run up grassy paths and easy-going trails, with plenty of places to stop and sniff. For me, it was the perfect way to round off this trip.

From the summit, you’re treated to one of the finest views of Keswick, Derwentwater, and the surrounding fells. The panorama stretches across to Skiddaw towering behind, and on a clear day you can see far down the lake with Catbells and Borrowdale in the distance. It’s a view that feels like a reward far greater than the effort it takes to get there.

This climb was particularly special because it marks the end of our current Lake District adventure. Over the past four weeks we’ve managed to tick off eight Wainwrights, along with a good handful of other crags and peaks that aren’t on the list but gave us just as much enjoyment. Altogether, we’ve covered around 180 miles on foot.

We never set out intending to begin the full challenge of climbing all 214 Wainwrights, but somehow it feels like that journey has already begun. Whether we complete them all or not, every step with Teddy and Buddy has been a joy, and Latrigg gave us the perfect farewell, gentle, green, and with a view that makes you want to come back for more.

Until the next adventure,
Clive, Teddy & Buddy 🐾
