Sleeping mat

I recently swapped out my old sleep mat for the Kilos Gear Standard, and it’s been a serious upgrade in comfort. It’s lightweight, packs down small, and offers just the right balance of cushioning and support after a long day on the trail. The design feels stable and keeps me from sliding around, even on uneven ground. It’s noticeably quieter than others I’ve used too — no constant crinkling every time I move. While I’m still keeping an eye on the R-value for colder nights, so far it’s held up well in mixed conditions. Paired with a good sleeping bag, it’s made a big difference to how well I rest out there.

Update – January 2026

After a few more months of use, I need to revise my original thoughts.

The Kilos Gear Standard mat is comfortable. There’s no denying that. It’s lightweight, it packs down small, and on milder nights it does exactly what it says on the tin.

But once temperatures started to drop, the limitations became obvious.

Even in conditions that were not extreme, the cold from the ground pushed straight through. It was not a case of being slightly chilly. It was that deep, creeping cold that drains your warmth from underneath and leaves you awake at three in the morning questioning your life choices.

Comfort on the surface means very little if the insulation underneath is not doing its job.

For summer use, it might be perfectly fine. For shoulder seasons or anything colder, in my experience, it simply is not up to the task. The R value just does not seem sufficient for UK ground temperatures outside peak summer.

Good sleep in the outdoors is not a luxury. It is the difference between waking up refreshed and waking up shattered. And once the ground chill starts pulling heat from you all night, no sleeping bag can fully compensate for that.

So for me, this one is being retired from anything beyond warm weather trips.

Honest kit reviews are important. Gear should earn its place.
